Industries
IEGO takes a regional, multi-sector approach to economic development. More specifically IEGO is centered on a cluster-based approach to inclusive economic development because it is the fastest road to advance opportunities for businesses and residents.
Clusters focus on what industries are more competitive within the Inland Empire due to geography, labor force and access. In this way, IEGO can improve the performance of these key clusters so that they succeed, grow, and attract similar businesses. Developing an industry cluster generates greater productivity and innovation, higher wages, and more entrepreneurial activity than developing a single industry sector.
For example, the non-profit public policy organization Brookings Institution identified sustainable logistics, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity/IT, and green technology as existing and emerging clusters in the Inland Empire.
CASE STUDY: GREEN TECHNOLOGY
Occupying much of Southern California, the Inland Empire is ideal for the clean-tech industry due to its strategic location and background in manufacturing. The region boasts a skilled workforce with a background in manufacturing, has several research universities and colleges actively engaged in clean-technology research, and local government agencies supporting clean-technology development. Several mainstay clean-tech companies like Tesla and First Solar are already operating within the region, alongside clean-tech research organizations such as the Air Resources Board and the UC Riverside Center for Environmental Research and Technology.
